Sauk Rail Trail Description

The Sauk Rail Trail offers some of the best riding in rural, west-central Iowa. The paved 33-mile trail is capped at either end by a state park and offers a diverse mix of views and experiences in between. Friendly small towns every few miles add comfort and convenience, while frequent nods to the corridor’s railroad past add historical interest.

Start at the trail’s north end in Lake View to be welcomed by a unique sculpture over the trail entrance: an arch made of bicycles. As you face the trail, you can swing your head to the left to see Black Hawk Lake just two blocks down. Black Hawk Lake State Park is nestled against its shoreline; the 86-acre site offers numerous amenities for camping, hiking, hunting, fishing, canoeing and kayaking, and horseback riding.

A trail user fee of $2 per day is required for individuals age 18 and older; look for the self-service pay box at the trailhead. Heading south, you’re soon enveloped by trees as you travel through a wildlife area and, just a mile later, alongside Black Hawk Marsh.

After about 13 miles of riding, you’ll reach Breda, home to about 500 residents. Be sure to have a look inside the community’s restored 1905 depot, which sits trailside and includes memorabilia from the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad.

South of Breda, the vista opens up to expansive farm fields. Windmills dot the horizon, and you’ll likely see cows out in the pastures. Keep your eyes open for deer and rabbits; you might catch a fleeting glimpse of them as they dive into the underbrush along the trail. You’ll also pass under an old wooden trestle bridge on your way to Carroll. As you enter the city, the bucolic flavor of the trail gives way to a suburban atmosphere.

Most of the trail thus far will have been fairly level, but as you approach the trail’s end at Swan Lake State Park, you’ll encounter a few hills. Plunk yourself down on a bench to enjoy some well-earned rest and lake views, or loop around the lake for a 3.8-mile ride. If you’re planning to stay overnight, tent and RV camping are available within the park, a 510-acre multiuse area offering a range of outdoor activities and amenities.

Parking and Trail Access

To reach the northern trailhead in Lake View from US 71 northbound, turn left (west) onto 330th St./SR 175. After 4.2 miles, turn left onto Third St. Go 0.5 mile (road turns into Crescent Park Drive), continue as the road turns into Lake St., and then take a slight left to stay on Lake St. Turn right onto Third St., and go 1.5 blocks. Parking and the trailhead with its distinctive arch are located on your left.

At the southern end of the trail, parking is available in Swan Lake State Park (22676 Swan Lake Drive). From US 71 northbound, turn right onto 220th St. After 1.4 miles, turn right onto the park access road, and look for parking on your right.

Sauk Rail Trail Reviews

Closed section

A mile or so south of Lake View the trail is closed for another mile. Not to worry. You can take the highway south just short of the RR tracks, and take the gravel road to the end. The trail starts up again there.

smooth trail

We really enjoyed this ride. Since we rode in March there was not any foliage on trees or landscape. But the trail condition was smooth sailing all the way.

Great Trail

Wow! This is a trail worth ridding. We started out in Carroll and rode up and back to Breda, then down and around Swan Lake state park. The next day we went from Lake View to Breda and back. The trail is all concrete, they have replaced all the sections that were asphalt. We had a great time.

beautiful!

What a great trail! We explored the trail over two days. We started in Lakeview and went down to Brenda for a really enjoyable 30ish mile day. This portion of the trail is in great condition and passes through some wildlife preserve, protected marsh land, and natural resource management areas. We saw an incredible amount of wildlife. Check out a little café called Kays for some homemade pie. For a second day we started at Brena and went down to Caroll, Iowa. This portion of Trail is not as good condition as the northern section. The views are really pretty and the greed is still there were so slight that it’s virtually flat. This portion of the trail has a lot of exposed areas that could be a bit of a challenge if there was a strong wind.

Great trail for folks in their 60's

We look for trail segments where we can ride 6-10 miles, then find a meal, then return to our car. The Breda-Carnarvon segment on the Sauk Rail Trail is one such ride. We parked our car on a shady street near the fairgrounds park in Breda. (Breda has at least one store where you can buy provisions) Got on the paved trail and rode 7 miles to Carnarvon, a segment with gentle grades and the bridge approaches are good. Just to the west of the trail in Carnarvon is a bar/cafe, that happened to have a lunch buffet on the day we were there. Its a great trail with well maintained right-of-way. An alternative would have been to ride to Carroll, eat, and return. Or if we had been more ambitious, to ride to Lake City and back. We'll do those rides next time.

Great Trail, Smooth Bridges

I rode this trail 8/1/2020 and it is in great condition. A majority of it has newer cement and in the last few years most of the bridges have had cement replace the wood planks, even the wood bridges have newer cement approaches that are smooth. Make sure to ride all the trail in Swan Lake, it is all new along with ride around Black Hawk Lake.

Many places to eat in Carroll but Lakeview is limited. On Sunday Morning no place for breakfast until 9 am, Kathy's Korner is very good food! On Sunday's nothing open between Lakeview and Carroll until 3pm.

On ,8/1/2020 rode from Carroll to Lakeview. This is a fantastic trail with most having newish cement, and most bridges are topped with cement with smooth approaches.

Hidden Gem

What a nice trail, under utilized and unsung. We rode from Breda to Swan Lake SP on a beautiful fall day. We only saw three other riders.

Excellent Trail

I have completed twice, once actually started in Sac City on County Blacktops to add miles but it also added some hills. Both times camped at Swan Lake State Park, there is huge amount of tent camper space available and lots of shade, I believe 100 rv sites. Two newer shower houses. The trail is well maintained and in great condition, wild flower, animal abundant. As others have mentioned, bring all the water you will need. There are about 4 port a pots but mostly southern half of trail, approx. 6 or 8 small shelters. Swan Lake Campground to Lake View my app showed 25.1 miles 370 ft gain. The $2 trail fee well worth it. 3 miles closest to South end are most challenging. The Swan Lake loop is also a challenge but beautiful.

A little bit of everything

I've ridden this entire trail and have really come to love it. It has a personality all its own and is completely different than the other trails I've ridden in the region.

From my perspective, it can be broken into four sections, each of which has a different feel. From the south, the first section starts at Swan Lake State Park and skirts Carroll to the south and west before reaching Maple River. This section is about 8.5 miles long and surprisingly hilly. After leaving the state park, you will pass through some subdivisions before crossing underneath US 71 and US 30. The pavement here is a mixed bag but in reasonably good shape. There are some tight spots but they're well marked. Use caution when crossing the Union Pacific mainline at Iris and Jade. There are a lot of trains on this route and they're typically moving pretty quickly.

The 7.2 mile stretch from Maple River to Breda is my favorite part of the trail. It's a gentle rise almost the whole way but you're surrounded by bigger hills that give it more of a mountain feel without the steep climb. It was a really pleasant surprise. There's also a wind farm here. The pavement is nice wide poured concrete. Breda's a nice little town with a general store on the main street.

The third section runs from Breda to the railroad underpass on Quincy. It's about 6.4 miles and pleasant. The pavement is poured concrete like the second section and as smooth as it gets. The jog to get under the railroad overpass is gravel, so use caution.

The last section is what I call the water section. It runs by Black Hawk Marsh on its way to Lake View and Black Hawk Lake State Park. It's heavily forested and runs through wetlands before ending just a few blocks from the heart of one of the prettiest little towns in the Upper Midwest.

Well Maintained

We can’t say much about this trail since we decided to try it out for the first time during a day with 25+ mile an hour winds coming from the south. But what we were able to do, about 6 miles starting from Lake View, was very well maintained. The first 3 miles are nicely wooded & protected. We happily paid the daily fee which is asked to help with maintenance of the trail. Other bikers that we talked to said we’d be one of the few who have actually paid, which I find to be sad when it’s such a nice trail that’s for the enjoyment of all.

Hidden Gem

I'd never even heard of this trail until my wife and I found it this weekend. We didn't have time to cover the entire trail, but road about 26 miles RT from Lake View to Breda. Lake View is a nice town where there are a couple of trail heads with plenty of parking. The trail itself is flawless and runs along the lake at the beginning and through the beautiful Iowa countryside the rest of the way. The scenery has rolling hills although the trail itself is flat. Can't wait to ride the rest of it!!

Nice upgrades and improvements

We rode the trail today from Lake View to Carroll. One feature we really like is the mile markers (for both directions) We ride this trail a few times each year so we definitely liked the bridge improvements with cement replacing the wooden bridge floors. And the addition of so many bike fix- it stations is a nice thing to have along the way. We also like the shelter at the 2 mile location out of Lake View. Love the improvements. Great maintenance all along the way. One of our favorite Iowa trails. (we drive 2 hours to access and ride this trail) Thank you!!!

A ride in beautiful Iowa

I'm from Kansas City and rode this trail on Labor Day weekend. It was a peaceful, quiet ride thru corn fields and the beautiful country sides of rural Iowa. The trail is in great shape and is very smooth until you have to cross several gravel roads. Like others have said, bring extra hydration and snacks as there's not much along the way to stop.

Good ride

We rode the trail for the first time right after Labor Day. We average 10 mph so it took us slightly over 4 hrs round trip. Scenery, along with all the little wooden bridges was neat! Concrete is much easier to ride than the asphalt on the Caroll end. An unusual experience we encountered was a train completely stopped for 45 min across the gravel intersection. All we could do was stand and wait ( along with other bikers on the opposite side). And further along the trail we came upon some cattle that were not on the right side of the fence!! Fortunately they were more curious than vicious. Our last few miles back to Lake View we rode in an unforecast light rain. Overall, it was a good ride and we will be back.

Sauk Trail...an easy ride

My husband and I rode the Sauk Rail Trail July 3, 2015 from Carroll to Lake View and back. Started about 8 am and ended in the afternoon. The trailhead at Carroll would rate about 1 star....it was one of the worst I've seen. Hard to find and nothing special. The other end at Lake View was great.....they made it very nice! The bike arch is cool. We met "Doc" taking care of the trail. Alot of nice people on the trail. Nice nature trail and lots of things to look at ...birds, critters, plants, windmills.

Perfect S24O Family Ride

We rode this trail with my 9 year old son from Lake View to Swan Lake, south of Carroll, about 25 miles.

We spent the night at the beautiful campground at Swan Lake ($10 fee for tent camping), and rode back the next morning.

Perfect distance for a young rider and we loved all the windmills.

Plenty of rest stops available and the trail is in perfect condition. Concrete for most of the way with a few miles asfault near Carroll.

Daily fee of $2 per adult is well worth it.

Great Trail

This trail is all hard surfaced. The trail will bring you close to gigantic wind mills, and through fields of prairie grass, corn, and soybean fields, as well as areas through trees. Bring suntan lotion for the open areas. The greatest distance to any town with services is 8 miles. The shelters halfway between Carroll and Maple River and Maple River and Breda make nice rest areas as well. Camping or hotels are available at both ends of the trail at Carroll or Lake View. Awesome!

Very Scenic

The trail is great condition and very scenic. Love going through the wind farm. You must pack snacks and drinks, no where to stop along trail.

Beautiful Scenery

I've only ridden this trail from Carroll to Breda but the scenery is amazing! You need to bring a $1 bill along which you deposit in one of the boxes as a charge for using the trail. The trail is paved, the only downside for me was that there are no underpasses when you come to intersections and a lot of the roads that meet with the trail are gravel roads.... VERY hard to make across on a road bike with skinny little tires. It does slow you down to cross these. Other than that a great trail. Pack snacks, not much between the towns.

Great Trail

This trail is now paved the whole length. This is a great and easy trail to ride. Some great stops along the trail include Trappers Den in Lake View, Carnarvon Inn in Carnarvon, Reds place in Breda and Little Gus's in Maple River. And of course Carroll has many great places to stop.

Sauk Rail Trail

My husband and I rode the trail from Lake View to Breda and back Sept. 8, 2011. We spent the night in Carroll and rode from Carroll up to Breda and back on Sept. 9, 2011. The weather, scenery, and trail were awesome! This is the best trail we've been on so far. It was concrete and very flat, a nice easy ride for us sr. citizens! We would highly recomend this trail. Be sure to pack beverages and snacks.

Nice Trail

This is a very nice ride for all ages. The concrete trail is wonderful. Make sure you bring along drink/snack as this is not readily available. Sunscreen is a must if going during middle of day as there is not a lot of coverage.

Great Trail

Rode the entire trail this weekend. It is pretty flat except around Swan Lake in Carol. No access to food on the trail though there are bars in the small towns along the trail. We stopped in Breda for a bite and could only find a convenience store that served fried foods. Don't get the homemade tenderloin it tastes like shoe leather. So in other words pack your own food. Nothing in Carroll is close to the trail. The Lake View side, Black Hawk Lake food is available in town. We stayed at Black Hawk Lake in the campground very nice campground. Pull thru sites are a bit close, but we were there to ride so didn't mind. It is a very scenic trail. It takes your through a wind farm, which I thought was pretty cool. The Black Hawk side is newer and nicer, concrete trail. The Swan Lake side is Asphalt and older.

Trail Paving is Complete

A little work remains on the shoulders but the trail is now all pavement. A Great trail to ride!

Very beautiful

"True, it's not too challenging except for finding the southern trail head. There was one area in a valley that looked like a hill scene from Europe. Very beautiful. "

Sauk Trail

"Very flat, and not very challenging riding, except that you have to keep working. Coasting is simply not an option.

Very pretty one you reach the Hazelbrush area south of Breda. Worth a water break here to spot wildlife and just relax."
