Wellsburg Yankee Trail Description

The Wellsburg Yankee Trail is a short, paved rail-trail that spans the entire length of Wellsburg, a small city on the Ohio River in West Virginia’s Northern Panhandle. The community trail runs through the heart of the small city, sharing Yankee Street and other low-traffic roads with motor vehicles where the original rail corridor was unavailable for trail development.

At its southern end, the Wellsburg Yankee Trail melds seamlessly into the nearly 7-mile Brooke Pioneer Trail. That trail eventually links with the Wheeling Heritage Trails, forming an uninterrupted off-road route into Wheeling and other parts of Ohio County.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking for the Wellsburg Yankee Trail can be found at a small lot at the intersection of Yankee Street and 3rd Street or along city streets in downtown Wellsburg.

Wellsburg Yankee Trail Reviews

Lots of street riding but well marked

Came up from Wheeling. We did this trail to the finish as it was only a few miles before the end and turnaround. About half the time on the street. But the town had good signage and what was very impressive was yellow lines on the road! I wish more towns would do that. Older trail and some bumps but I was impressed by the markings. Not very busy on the streets so safe for riding.

Wellsburg Yankee Trail

My husband and I came to bike this trail. I believe it would be a better walking trail. It would be great if we lived around this area. It was awkward to bike because we were constantly crossing streets or riding on the road. However, it was a nice little area.

Not really for biking..it is too short

If you want to bike, you will find this trail to be too short, nonetheless, it would be a great running trail. luckily it connects to other trails and Imwas able to go about 15 miles.

Servicable, not scenic

We traveled to the region to ride the Wellsburg Yankee, Brooke Pioneer and Wheeling Heritage Trails.

Starting at the northern most section, the Wellsburg Yankee Trail seems to serve the purpose of the getting local residents to the Brooke Pioneer trail.

The trail runs through the town, and for the most part was fairly well marked, but overall had nothing that was memorable.

If we came back to the region again, I think we would most likely skip this section and just start at the Brooke Pioneer Trail.
