The South Route Trail begins west of Mankato in Minneopa State Park, known for its beautiful waterfalls and views of the Minnesota River Valley. Heading southeast from the park, following County Road 90, you'll pass through open areas with some hilly terrain. Shortly after crossing the Blue Earth River, the trail connects to the Red Jacket Trail, a 13-mile rail-trail that heads into Mankato. After this connection, the trail flattens out and continues its journey to Minnesota Highway 22.
Parking can be found within Minneopa State Park (54497 Gadwall Road) on the western end of the trail.
We parked at Minneopa and did half the trail for a total of 6.3 miles round trip. You start by going uphill out of Minneopa which was really pretty, do a few smaller hills then there’s a killer hill shortly before Mt Kato. I did have to walk but my 20-year-old son conquered it. The prettiest part is in Minneopa and the rest parallels a road. The trail is in great shape though without any cracks.
The trail is very new/smooth/wide. Glad to see more investment in trails connecting people to different points of interest in MN safely disconnected from roadways.
However, note the description says "some hilly terrain"...that is a bit understated. If you are starting from the Red Jacket Trail intersection, the trail runs parallel (but safely far away from) a highway. This first section has a very large hill to go up that will result in younger children and novice or less athletic bikers walking their bikes up the long hill, and riding the brakes on their way back down to maintain speed control. Just keep that in mind when planning between Red Jacket Trail and Minneopa State Park.
