Print Friendly MapThe 1.5-mile Rock Furnace Trail is a scenic path in Roaring Run Recreation Area. The trail follows Roaring Run Creek from its confluence at the Kiski River to a small parking area off Brownstown Road. The steep, hilly trail makes for a scenic outing, taking in many small waterfalls along the creek. During spring, look for wildflowers in bloom, especially trillium that covers the stream valley hillsides.
The trail was built along a former gas well access road, and the highlight of the route is a 72-foot cable bridge built by volunteers to cross the creek. You'll also see the stonework remains of the Biddle Iron Furnace (a.k.a. the "Rock Furnace") near another landmark—"Camel Rock," as it's locally known. The furnace operated during the era of canal transport, from 1825 to 1850.
At the southern end of the Rock Furnace Trail, by the canal, you can pick up the Roaring Run Rail Trail.
A small parking area is available at the north end of the trail off Brownstown Road.

Nice trail. Gravel walkway without obstructions and not muddy. Easy with 2 little kids. Nice length with little ones. Plenty of places off trail to explore and wade in the water.
Wonderful hidden gem. Worth the hour drive. Will make this a regular trail!
I absolutely love this trail. Plenty of hills and turns makes it really fun to bike on. The cable bridge has a ramp on each end and is kinda narrow making it fun to bike across. There are short off road trails that run parallel to the main trail with rocks, roots and trees to practice mountain biking skills on. I really wish this trail was longer, but it does connect to the Roaring Run Trail which has some good mountain biking trails branching off of it. There's a lot of good riding for all different skill levels in this area.
Sometimes when I'm walking on the trail I look up and imagine an Indian standing on top of one of those really huge rocks that are in the woods Dressed in war paint hand holding a bow up in the air. I pretend that I have gone back in time when I'm walking on the trail and expect to see Indians.
My favorite place to take a walk
I love this trail I walk it regularly. It has some steep hillsides that may not be suitable for everyone. There is a trail leading to a waterfall. It is a truly gorgeous trail.
My family loves this trail. We are looking forward to picnicking by the waterfall next summer!
