Located along the north bank of the Kansas River, the Lawrence Levee Trail runs along the top of the flood-control levee on the outskirts of Lawrence. The trail offers views of nearby farmland and the river as well as the downtown area of Lawrence, on the opposite bank.
In the north, the trail provides access to Riverfront Park, which features a disc golf course, off-leash dog park and a wildlife and native grass preserve. At the southeastern end of the trail, various hiking and mountain biking spur trails provide a diverse range of experiences closer to the Kansas River.
Parking for the Lawrence Levee Trail is available near the trail’s north end in Riverfront Park. The park’s entrance is located at the intersection of N. 2nd Street, US 24 and US 40. In the south, a small parking lot can be found at the southern end of N. 8th Street.
Mostly fields, river often obscured, north part has a section that is a small trail only big enough for single bike trail. Electric bikes not nimble enough for that section. Looks like fun for mountain bikers.
Road east 5 miles from the bridge in downtown Lawrence. All gravel, well maintained, flat. Saw several deer, runs along the Kansas River, nice trail. Will ride west of the bridge next time.
I have taken the whole family here multiple times. Very few road crossings, and wide open rides. Easy parking near the mountain bike trails. This is basically a levee ride, so flat, and smooth gravel riding.
Love this trail. I highly recommend this trail everyone including children as it’s a fairly easy trail. Children should always be escorted by a parent or their parents. I saw a 5 year old girl with her father in the trails once and was amazed how well she rode.
The trail continues a little more than a mile further north than shown. It's easy to see if you go to satellite view on the map.
This is a easy short trail with decent views of farmland and the Kansas River. The section around the damn and downtown Lawrence are definetly worth it. Bring plenty of sunscreen as they is no shade. The gravel roads geting to the East End are poorly marked and parking is very limited.
This a great trail, It's not too hard, and the view of the river is very nice. It's a good beginner trail, but it can also be challenging towards the beginning. My family and I have completed this trail many times and always enjoy it. I recommend it!
The trail showed little affect from all the rains we've had for a couple of weeks, which made for a nice leisurely ride. The trail is very wide which made it nice for sharing with pedestrians and other bikers. It is a flat ride, and I would describe it as beginner level. Starting from Riverfront Park, you have a nice view of the Kansas River for a couple of miles. The scenery then turns to farm fields with wide open views.
Take your mountain bike or road bike on these trails by the river. The beginning is a little more challenging but eases up to a nice ride after the 1st mile or so. Great ride for the family. Stay together though. There are lots of path off shoots and it's easy to get turned around. I also recommend Map My Ride or something similar with gps. Try it, then explore Lawrence shops around the river or on Mass street.
