The Kyrene Canal Path runs alongside the Kyrene Canal in Tempe and Chandler, providing a connection between residences, businesses, shopping destinations and the Ken McDonald Golf Course. The trail is paved and landscaped throughout Tempe, but the surface transitions to gravel and then crushed stone as it becomes more of a neighborhood dog-walking and jogging route at its southern end in Chandler.
At its northern end (near where the Kyrene Canal feeds into the Western Canal), the trail also connects to the longer Western Canal Path. Take that trail east to reach Mesa, Chandler and Gilbert.
There are no official parking areas for the Kyrene Canal Path, but parking may be available on local neighborhood streets. Be sure to obey any posted parking restrictions.
Great path with lots of options including turn East at the Ken McDonald golf course parking lot to go to the 101 and ride around the lakes in the ASU research park between Elliot and Warner. But also if traveling north go to Guadalupe and then into Kiwanis Park with a few hills to Baseline. Then you can go west and catch the Highline Canal to go either north or south.
I really liked this trail. It is concrete, and for much of the trail, there is gravel running parallel to the concrete for those who prefer it.
The concrete was in good repair. There are nice trees and flowers planted along much of the path.
On weekends, there is a fair amount of activity, but on weekdays it is pretty quiet.
There are some street crossings- most have buttons that you can push to stop traffic to cross.
Near the golf course, they have put up fencing barriers to keep those on the trail safe from wayward golf balls.
The trail connects to other canal trails, so you can go for a nice long distance ride.
The biggest drawback was bike riders who don't call out when they are passing us...
This was and easy ride. It runs adjacent to the canal with waterfowl, a golf course and power generating plant as points of interest. At the north terminus is the I-60 to I-10 Stack and the Arizona Mills Mall. Most major street crossings are not friendly (no signals for pedestrians). Nice scenery, paved the entire distance and no hills or other obstacles.
