From Interstate 80 take Exit 1 onto Old Mine Road. Head north on Old Mine Road. The first parking area is to the left of the traffic light that controls the one land section of the road. The, northern parking area at Fairview is on the left about a mile further up Old Mine Road.
I attempted to bike this trail today. From the south end it was easy to find, but difficult to ride. Very overgrown to the point that I wouldn't try it in shorts. The single track was clear under the overhanging weeds. Would be a very nice short trail when cleared.
Easy to find on the south end - the trail starts at the gate which is next to the traffic light. The foot path is always clear but narrow - I walked with shorts and sneakers without any concerns. The trail ends at the old railroad bridge abutment, which is high so you get a nice overlook of the river (on the other side is Shawnee resort). It's not recommended that you park at the north end (Fairview) - it's a steep rocky climb down with no signs.
Short, easy hike if you're in the area and have 30 minutes or so to kill. Not worth coming to on its own...
Visited this trail yesterday and quickly found out why the other reviewer here had trouble finding it. What was once a wide railbed walking trail has now turned into a narrow overgrown footpath littered with downed trees. branches (some of which appeared to had been tossed from Old Mine rd above), and even powerlines. The "JC 96" marker is still accessible with some minor bushwhacking, but any hiking beyond that isn't recommended especially with the downed wires. Could not reach the northern parking area thanks to Old Mine rd temporarily being closed due to recent storms.
I am so disappointed. My family and I drove an hour out of our way to find this trail only to never find it. We used the directions you get when you click on the map. So frustrating. Very poorly marked signs or no signs at all, as if everyone was a local.
" This short rail trail runs a little over a mile from just above the I-80 at Old Mine Rd to a point where old railway crossed the river. The old bridge abutements are still at the former crossing. There are nice views of the river, and fishing is popular along the banks. The grade is fairly level and the surface is foot friendly.
