The Grass River Natural Area has a system of six trails through wetlands and woodland, a beautiful retreat south of Lake Bellaire in northern Michigan. The preserve's rail-trail provides just over 2 miles of crushed-stone trail for walking or biking. Dogs on a leash are also permitted on this trail, but not on the others.
The other trails in the system are pedestrian only with varied surfaces, including gravel, dirt, woodchips, and boardwalks. During the summer you can take guided walks with a naturalist to learn about the wildlife, wildflowers, and habits in the preserve.
The entrance to the Grass River Natural Area (6500 Alden Highway, Bellaire) is off Alden Highway (CR 618).
This surprised and delighted us. It’s serene, the nature is stunning, and it’s a birders paradise. Our new favorite spot ¿¿
Loved the boardwalk and winding trail through lush vegetation and flowering plants! Birds calling and healthy trees. Seeing the waterway and streams added to the beauty.
Went to this trail on 8/12/202. There were No Trespassing signs and roped off areas. No parking available due to grass habitat.
I checked out this beautiful natural area with a friend and our kids (ages 9-13). I was overwhelmed by the beauty of this place. The trails are easy and well-marked, although it was damp and we had to be careful about slipping on the wood trails in the marshy areas. The kids loved it -- it was magical. If you go be sure to check out the fern leaf trail. Also, go to the dock area. The nature center is also great for kids. Highly recommend!
