The Golf Links-Aviation Path begins in downtown Tucson and runs southeast, following busy Barraza-Aviation Parkway (State Route 210) and later Golf Links Road—hence the trail's name. Road noise can be a nuisance on the trail's western half, but several bridges and tunnels make the route a non-motorized commuter's dream. Of particular note is the Diamondback (or Rattlesnake) Bridge over E. Broadway Boulevard, whose entire structure is designed to look like a snake.
Aviation buffs will also appreciate the path, as planes from Davis–Monthan Air Force Base regularly fly overhead. A portion of the base's famous boneyard, the sprawling final resting place of all out-of-service aircraft from the United States government, is also located immediately adjacent to the trail's eastern end.
Cyclists and those in wheelchairs should note that the trail's western endpoint at 9th Street can only be reached via stairs. An accessible entrance and exit can be found just a short distance to the east on 10th Street.
Parking for the Golf Links-Aviation Path can be found at Freedom Park (5000 E. 29th Street). From the park, take the spur trail less than 0.5 mile south to reach the main trail.
Started downtown. Homeless encampments and rough surface first five miles. Chatters your teeth and bike. Maybe a bad batch of asphalt from the start. Would not ride this trail again until resurfaced unless I had to get to work and no other options.
The Rattlesnake Bridge is really cool and neat for kids. This area is easy access to 4th Avenue which is a mauve, cool bar and grungy student section. BikeArizona.org of The Arizona Bicycle Association ranks the Tucson Loop as the number one biking trail in the state of Arizona. Great place to take kids.
Becareful when riding this one, lots of low hanging branches. Trail is nothing special and way over due some maintenance. One section had large cracks in the asphalt. Lots of trash along the trail and only recommend a day time ride thru this area. Only recommend this as a need some exercise and are in the local area. Otherwise skip it and check out one of the other Tucson rides.
Runs beside a 6 lane highway. Lots of loud traffic noise. If you use this map and start downtown, you have to climb steps to get to the beginning of the trail.
Perfect trail for a family ride! So many of the "river path" trails all look the same: wash on one side, desert on the other. This trail takes you through beautiful creeks (sans water ;), over quaint bridges, under the aviation highway via tunnel (fun!), under the flag bridge, and ends at Tucson's famous Rattle Snake Bridge! Start at Freedom Park for an easy yet enjoyable 4 mi. ride.
