Delyte W. Morris Trail Description

The Delyte W. Morris Trail lies entirely on the campus of Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville (SIUE). It is named for the university's president at the Carbondale campus in the 1960s who helped create the Edwardsville campus.

Students are the largest user group for this trail, since it connects various campus facilities and housing on the north side of the university. The neighboring city of Edwardsville can be reached by road-trail combination routes east from campus. And the trail's westward intersection with the MCT Bluff Trail connects users to the university athletic fields. Since this trail forms no long circuit with the larger MCT network, traffic generally moves at a slower pace.

There's little opportunity to see the campus along the trail. Much of the trail is covered by heavy woods; much has embankments on both sides that prevent seeing beyond. The trail's mostly peaceful and solitary, except for school days and activities on the weekends.

Parking and Trail Access

Public parking for the trail is available 300 feet from its west end, just off the intersecting MCT Bluff Trail. To reach there from I-270, take Exit 9 and go north on Bluff Road. At the stop light, continue straight ahead onto University Drive. Continue 1.2 mile and turn left onto Stadium Drive. Drive 1 mile to the small parking lot on the right.

Bicycle Follies

That's a great picture of bicycles bounding down the hillside!
Madison County can find an old railroad right-of-way anywhere! Who would have thought they'd even build a university around one?! I was hoping to see more of the buildings and grounds of SIUE on this ride; but then, all that would have distracted from the more tranquil route the trail affords. We found a great shortcut along New Poag Rd, Henry St and Grand Ave to connect to the Goshen Trail and continue on to miles and miles more of great riding.
