Located in Blackwater Falls State Park in the Monongahela National Forest, the Davis Trail is an easy rail-trail that ambles up Canaan Mountain as it heads south towards Canaan Valley Resort State Park. For its entire route, the trail parallels Engine Run, a stream named for a narrow-gauge engine that once fell into its water. Horses are allowed, but not recommended. The trail is marked with blue blazes and signs.
The scenic Plantation Trail meets the Davis Trail at its midpoint, and trail users can continue west on Canaan Loop Road and then south on the Railroad Grade Trail to access Canaan Valley Resort State Park. This route is also a component of the Allegheny Trail, a 330-mile hiking route that spans eastern West Virginia.
Parking is located within Blackwater Falls State Park near the horse stables. The trail can also be accessed from Canaan Loop Road/Forest Road 13. This road is located off of State Route 32 approximately 3.3 miles south of Davis. From Canaan Valley Resort State Park, follow the Railroad Grade Trail north until its junction with Canaan Loop Road. Turn right on Canaan Loop Road and then left onto the Davis Trail.
Attempted this trail back in July and it was a HUGE mistake on my part. I’m sure that if I left earlier and had a higher-end MTB and more experience, I would have been fine. Unfortunately for my skill level and bike limitations the entire 1.5miles I traveled were an absolute nightmare and I would NOT attempt again without a Sherpa and a better bike. This is a single-track trail and what I would consider a black diamond level trail - NOT a beginner trail as other resources have pointed out. It’s very thick with growth, rocks, roots and tech.
Slightly difficult for beginners but beautiful scenery. Not a smooth, maintained trail. More of a creek bed, but markers along the way keep you on track.
