Chattahoochee Valley Railroad Trail

Lacks Signs - But Nice Otherwise - Here's where to Park

July, 2024 by dscottgriffin

Actually a nice trail in a has been mill town.

The trails do have a couple of switch backs at the south end, but these are easily identifiable. As others mentioned, the four lane crossing is the most confusing area near the old Langdale Mill. Just look well across Highway 29 to see where the trail picks up again.

There are actually 6 parking areas along the trail.

Shawmut (North End)
3506 22nd Avenue
Valley, AL 36854

North Central (Old Langdale Mill)
3506 19th Avenue
Valley, AL 36854

Old Train Station
103 River Rd
Valley, AL 36854

South Central (Middle of a neighborhood)
3136 Columbus Rd
Valley, AL 36854

South End (My Favorite)
Behind First Christian Church of Riverview (on Myhand St.)
1465 California Rd
Valley, AL 36854

Most Southern End - Old Riverview School
7755 School St
Valley, AL 36854

The trail is nicely paved and lightly used. Unfortunately, the historical signs have fallen into disrepair. The trail could use paint on the ground if nothing else to give directions where confusion may exist.

Note - watch out for the missing barrier plates on the ground at road crossings that may puncture your tire if you are not careful.

Nice local ride overall.

Confusion

September, 2021 by vpdn5yq96s

This was hard to find and harder to find the start. No maps of the trail were posted where I parked (somewhere near 22nd). I was a bit sketched on leaving my car unattended as some rando in a pedo van was sitting there (left when I got out). Anyways, I made it 1.3 and had no clue where to go but back. Judging by the money spent on the city hall, I’m sure they could use some to pick the trash up along the trail. I wouldn’t recommend this trail without figuring the whole trail out.

A series of trails¿

Took a while to figure this trail(s?). It seems that it’s broken in sections with no parking area really identified. The one I did find was a bit shifty (off 22nd st). Some rando in a pedo can was just sitting there. I couldn’t figure out why there’s trash all along the trail. Judging by the amount of money put into the trail and the city hall, you’d think it’d be clean. The section I did run was 1.3. Also, no trail map at the beginning or my end (it was an end point).

Nice Trail & Nice Ride

May, 2021 by stephenjohnson713

This was our first experience with this trail. I like that it's been newly paved. Not a huge amount of scenery on this trail but nice blend of small Alabama town and woods. I wish there was better signage. We got slightly confused with the 4-lane crossing because the trail just abruptly ends and you can't visibly see where it starts across the Hwy 29 4-lane. Mostly level trail. I was hoping the trail would take you down to the Chattahoochee River but it just abruptly stops once again. Would be nice if they could somehow incorporate the trail with the river. But overall, a nice ride and nice trail.

just okay

I guess I expected much more... The trail was a little confusing to follow and we wound up on a main road for half a mile. We found the correct place to cross on the way back and we’re able to avoid riding on the road other than crossing streets. There is one section going through a wooded area that was very nice.

rode full trail. north to south

August, 2020 by gibbs20

Parked at an old farmers market at the very north end of the trail. Rode both spurs on the south end to their ends and back 11 miles TOTAL, so 5.5 miles of trail not 7. Fresh, smooth asphalt about 40/60 shaded/sun. Nice ride, nothing special.

the whole trail has been newly paved!

So excited that this quaint little trail in valley, Alabama has been completely repaved. While you have to cross a large road for part of it(albeit only a mile and a half) it’s been greatly improved. I would suggest parking at the Langdale Mill site instead of the trail head off of 35th st. Much more visible and more traffic. So come ride this sweet little trail!!

Smooth ride and uncrowded. No traffic. At one point it seems to end but you have to cross the road to catch the rest of the trail

Falling on hard times......

May, 2018 by russellhays

I set out today looking for a new trail to ride. After reading the reviews I wasn't expecting much, but still decided to give it a try as it was only 30 minutes from where I live and the trail distance sounded good. I parked in the lot in Shawmut and was immediately concerned by the graffiti on all the signage. Still, I unloaded my bike and decided to take the risk. The trail still comes to an abrupt end about 1 1/2 miles into the ride. Fortunately I had read the reviews and was able to locate the next portion on the other side of U.S. 29. Other people have posted some nice pictures of the area. All I can say is the pictures are much nicer than the actual scenery now. Everything seems to be getting worse. The trail itself is in desperate need of maintenance. There are areas where it has been dug up and never repaved. It seems the City of Valley has lost interest, funding or both for keeping this trail in good condition. By the time I made it to Riverview, I had lost all desire to look for the river itself. The ride back was quick and uneventful. Overall, the area along the trail is very sketchy. As a police officer, I would not recommend anyone riding it alone. There are several areas where, if someone was so inclined, a person could be robbed very easily. Hopefully in time the City of Valley will make an attempt to clean up the trail and help it reach it's full potential. Until then, once was more than enough.

Chattahoochee Valley Railroad Trail

Did not see a single thing

July, 2014 by cowtipr

Worst trail I have ridden. I thought by the description this would be a nice trail with views. All I saw was a bad condition trail that was not very wide and backyards. I had to dodge workers that were mowing lawns. I ended up driving along the road that the trail was next to after my attempted ride to see if there was a part of the trail that was worth riding. After 7 miles of following the trail I did not find a single sight that resembled what others have posted in the gallery. I wasted 4 hours of driving to ride this trail!

Chattahoochee Valley Railroad Trail

Not Worth It

February, 2014 by nicki.smith.7547

This trail is so not worth the trip. I drove about an hour and 15 minutes to get
there and was very disappointed. Like someone else pointed out, about 1.75 miles into the ride the trail just ends with no sign of where to go from there. I knew where to go because of a previous post on here. It required the crossing of HWY 29, a fairly busy hwy. The trail from there went through some pretty rough neighborhoods. I did not feel comfortable at all as a female riding alone out here. Then the trail just ends at just shy of 7 miles, again no signs or indication.
